Bidets have their origin in France. They are popular in Europe but rarely seen in American Homes.
They are gaining popularity not only because of the hygiene factor but also because they are easy to use by older people, children and people with incontinence.
Bidet system is basically water wash of the private parts of body in place of wiping with tissue. A basic bidet involves pressing a button upon which a nozzle hidden under toilet seat is extended. It sprays a stream of water for as long as the button is pressed. Once the button is released, nozzle gets washed and retracts. You turn on the water when temperature of the water is to your liking. You basically sit astride a bidet just as in a toilet. Control of the bidet can be at the side, front or rear of the unit.
Bidet is generally made of vitreous china. It is placed next to the toilet in the bathroom.
