Bathroom ventilation

Besides supply lines of water, every other source of water in the bathroom is a source of problem. Main problem is that of condensation. Moisture combined with the smells in the bathroom makes bathroom ventilation, a necessity. Whether you are constructing a new bathroom or remodeling an old one, bathroom ventilation is an important consideration.

Condensation and dampness not only causes mould and mildew growth but can even threaten the building structure.

The answer to all these problems is a ventilation fan. Ventilation fans come in different sizes and the size of the fan is determined by size of the room. The CFM (cubic feet per minute) of a ventilation fan is also determined by the number of fixtures in the bathroom like shower, bath tub, toilet etc. Normally, instead of installing one big fan of high cfm, multiple fans are installed. Mostly fans are between 50 cfm and 250 cfm. These fans are installed both in the ceiling and the wall. Lubrication is not such a big issue with these fans since they use ball bearing motors.

Home ventilating institute (HVI) recommends that fan should be left on, after using the bathroom, for 20 minutes. A timer is an option which allows the fan to turn off automatically after the recommended time. Some of the other things to consider before buying ventilation fans are- noiseless operation, stylish fascias, compatibility with ducting accessories. Also check the guarantee period of these fans and see to it that they meet current European Safety Standards.
