Lighting the bathroom can be a clever and tricky business. Bathroom lighting should be considered from ceiling, recessed (light from above), vanity, accent (lighting from below counters, inside showers etc.) and decorative (sconces).
Lighting can serve various purposes. Bright light is needed for putting on
make-up whereas softer light is needed when you want to relax.
For vanity area side lighting is used which is directed towards the face. Light
should come from above and both sides in the grooming area.
Then there is Layered lighting, which comes in various designs. For example, tray ceiling lighting is suitable for subtle accent lighting.

Lighting can also be used for making a small bathroom look bigger. Recessed spot lighting is used for this purpose or a small table lamp on the counter top or shelf will do the trick.
Sconces, on the other hand are used for ornate decorations.
